Survival in Society

Using the Heimler Social Functioning Approach and Scale as an Aid to More Effective Hypnotherapy

The Heimler approach is a unique blend of methods, including a psychometric scale, which is both a sophisticated diagnostic and assessment instrument and, perhaps more importantly, a tool used with the client in the process of therapy.

It is especially helpful in our work with those clients who, for example,

  • are so stuck in their current difficulty that they need help in putting their particular problems into perspective against the backcloth of their total life situation, or
  • who find it difficult to express their troublesome thoughts and feelings, or
  • who are poor at self observation, do not recognise cause and effect in their behaviour and are unaware of themes and connections between different parts of their lives,
  • and for whom we need to better understand the whole context in which a problem or condition has emerged.

The Heimler Scale is an extremely sophisticated instrument with a predictive and diagnostic capability, especially in relation to the way in which the balance of satisfactions and frustrations provides an accurate picture of how well a person is functioning and what level and kind of support is required.

Not only does it help us to understand a client’s present functioning and strength of inner resources, it is a valuable assessment tool that enables us to gather the information that will help the client, in a person centred yet structured way, turn life’s frustration into satisfaction, meaning and purposeful action.

This 3 day course provides an opportunity to gain a Certificate as a Scale Practitioner from the British Association of Social Functioning and, from Heimler International, a Licence to Use this sophisticated Scale as an aid to person centred therapy and as a diagnostic instrument to gauge client coping ability and the level of support required.

This training is part of the NCHP’s programme of CPD events, the hours for which are recognised by UKCP for those on the pathway to UKCP accreditation and is recognised by BACP as contributing to the theory and skills development hours required for BACP accreditation.

Although it is anticipated that those participating will find this course so absorbing, interesting and practically useful that they will wish to complete the whole course,  for those who wish it, the first day will serve as an overall introduction and can stand alone at a fee of £120.00, with the balance of £230.00 refunded should they decide not to participate in the full 3 days. (For those eligible for reduced fees these will be proportional).

There will be an additional once only fee of £50.00 paid over to Heimler International with the application to obtain the Licence to use the Scale.

Depending on the amount and level of work completed during the attended 3 days, there may still be some assignment work to be done following the course, under the guidance of the tutor, David Collingwood-Bell, for those wishing to gain the Certificate and Licence. This assignment work will also need to be completed by those on the UKCP pathway in order to gain a CPD Certificate from the National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy. All others will receive a CPD certificate stating the number of hours of attendance.

If you wish to attend, or are interested but need further information, please e-mail David at hypnodelwyn.db@gmail.com.

The core of Human Social Functioning was formed within the daily horror of cruelty and degradation within the concentration camps of Buchenwald and Auschwitz in which Heimler found strengths that can potentially transcend almost anything – so long as one can create a sense of meaning and purpose through action.

In the midst of these terrible war time experiences Heimler  was already developing ways of utilizing the power of the unconscious to find solutions and discovering, from the rich and unique powerhouse of his memories, knowledge and imagination, the potential for living creatively.

Heimler’s survival was not just to do with how he could make use of all the negative happening around him in the camps but also about how he could learn from it all for the sake of the future – a theme that followed him as he created a new life following his release from captivity as he listened to what people said about their lives, especially about what was important and meaningful to them and their satisfactions and frustrations in life.

As a result of all this listening and subsequent discussion and analysis, Heimler created this Scale which, whilst not measuring energy directly, demonstrates the usable and non-usable aspects of energy in terms of satisfaction and frustration.

The 55 questions of the scale, whilst viewed from a here and now perspective, include questions of childhood and overall questions related to past, present and future, as Eugene Heimler said “Past and present are linked together by invisible wires and, in a sense, our todays reflect the problems and the solutions of our yesterdays”.

Our philosophy that ensures that all tutors are full-time practitioners

Within the National College we have a philosophy that ensures that all tutors are full-time practitioners in addition to their training. By this we mean that they derive their primary income from seeing clients: this ensures that they "walk the walk" as well as "talk the talk". You will find that we often have examples of current clients to tell you about that illustrate theoretical points. There are some trainers who set up a school because they can't make it as practitioners. Would you want to be trained by them?

We believe it is vitally important that you see demonstrations of techniques and also get to practice

We believe it is vitally important that you see demonstrations of techniques and also get to practice. This gives you the confidence to practice with "real people" as soon as (if not before) you qualify. We say before, because you will be given permission to work with certain issues at certain points in your training. Not all trainers demonstrate, and not all give you a chance to practice and build your confidence.(ALL ours DO!)

On completion of our courses, graduates can join a range of professional bodies

On completion of the certificate course (stage two), graduates can join a range of professional bodies: the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (our regulator), the National Council for Hypnotherapy (a members’ co-operative with high standards, of which both our Principal and Managing Director are former chairs) and our own National Society of Hypnosis, Psychotherapy & Mindfulness. Our course also includes business/practice management. So often hypnotherapists and psychotherapists fall at the first hurdle because, while they may be wonderful at what they do, they don't know how to get the clients. The National College has a great depth of knowledge and experience in this area that you can draw on. All our tutors around the country are willing to share with you what works and what doesn't so that you can learn from our successes, and our mistakes!
